《矇》Blurry - my first short film

The past few days I have been directing a 4 minute short film, from script-writing, directing the shoot (in a team of 7) to editing. Even though it is "finished," I still feel like I am in another world. Andrea's Bocelli's Tremo e t'amo is still humming through my head and I am still in Claire's vibrant world of colour.Out of all the different parts of the work editing is the part where it all comes together. It is the most immersive part of the work, and you become intimate with the footage in a way that no other part does. Every second of the footage is a decision – sometimes conscious, sometimes unconscious; but through comparison and contrast it becomes really clear why this shot works here, and not half a second later.

Between the Dom-dom project and this I am getting a lot of practice in directing, and I feel like I am developing a certain style as a director… in the way I manage people and all the different elements of a project. These two projects are both very different I nature – one is a comic piece; the other is the language of poetic film – but both of them have asked me to develop an awareness of everything that needs to come together – people, schedules, set, costumes, props, music. It's good practice.

After a day of editing, one or two images remain burned in my mind: Claire in her studio, looking out of the window, as the image explodes from low saturation into colour. As a whole, this film does not come together for me; but that's ok. It has its moments, and I just need to keep creating. It doesn't matter if I don't create my masterpiece first time, or even second time, third time around. What is important is that I keep doing, and get better in the process.
