The Dom-dom Pigs Save the Star Tower

I have finished my first script. Aye, this script, written for the students of 鳳溪廖萬石堂 Secondary School as an entry for the HK Schools Drama Festival Competition, has the marvel of having a beginning, middle and end.

Out of necessity to get the script done to the students before Chinese New Year Holidays the script is still a bit rough around the edges, but it was tons of fun to write. It was even more fun to know that there are friends and colleagues who are happy to bounce ideas around with me.

I am still marvelling at the fact that - after all those hours scribbling on the train/holed up in my hotel room in Singapore the story has come to a narrative close. The themes in this script are largely irrelevent to my personal life: it was written with the particular students I was working with. They created the Dom-dom pigs; the punchy comic style was chosen because of the students English speaking abilities; and because they like to goof around. Although the play has makes social-political references to the Star Ferry Tower, these happened out of a need for narrative conflict (needed something to do with building/knocking down) rather than any political convictions or feelings of mine. Does this make me rather irresponsible? Perhaps. It was a ton of fun to write though; to just let my imagination + characters run riot on the page, and somehow, somehow, attempt to clean up the mess and structure it. Now I know how Ma'dom feels.

Synopsis

Once upon a time in a small village lived the 3 little pig brothers (One-dom, Two-dom and Three-dom). All of them were madly in love with the village Princess who lives in the Star Tower. Due to the neglect of their duties, they get kicked out of their home by their mother (Ma’dom).

The brothers, desperate for jobs, sign a contract with the Big Bad Wolf Deconstruction Company. The company, owned by Lady Wolfe, has permission from the Chief Executive Duck to tear down the Star Tower. The pigs discover that they are bound by their contract to help tear down the tower, or they will be made into bacon.

In order to get out of tearing down the tower, the 3 little pigs pretend to be sick with bird flu. This creates widespread panic and stops construction for a while. However, Ma'dom, on hearing that her sons are sick, breaks into the quarantined site and exposes this fabrication.

Demolition resumes. A final confrontation between the police + the protestors take place; but despite the protestors' efforts the Tower comes down. Then suddenly, Duck arrives, having really caught the bird flu, and on his dying breath, declares the Star Tower a historical monument. Although the tower is in shambles, the Dom-doms promise to help the Princess rebuild her Tower.
